PREFACE In view of globalization and growth of international relations worldwide, the improvement of foreign language communicative competence as a means of establishing mutual understanding becomes one of the priorities in training modern specialists. This being said, a significant role is given to the socio-cultural component of communication, based on the knowledge of traditions, customs, historical realities, peculiarities of national culture and mentality of the target-language country. This tutorial is a course on English-American country-study and is intended for students of non-linguistic Universities of all specialties and modes of attendance. The purpose of the tutorial is to form the cross-cultural competence of the future participants of the foreign-language communication process. The tutorial consists of two main thematic sections covering the studies of Anglophone countries, a set of appendices, and a list of bibliographical references and suggested reading. The first section, “British Studies”, is aimed at the formation of background knowledge on Great Britain and the countries of the Commonwealth. The second section, “American Studies”, forms the basic idea about America and Americans. Both sections are designed in a unified structure, divided into thematic units (history, culture, art, political system, etc.) and equipped with a set of testing exercises. The extensive text material that meets the criterion of authenticity is aimed at the students’ mastering the Anglophone countries knowledge needed for the communication activity. The after-reading tasks developed in accordance with general didactic and methodological principles secure the required level of skills and abilities to realize the socio-cultural component in the target language communication.
