§1
INTRODUCTION
Clothes are one of the very first things we notice when we meet or
see people. <...> In every country clothing is a form of sign language. <...> The reasons why we choose the
clothes we wear are as varied as the clothes themselves. <...> In many nations, people's clothing used to be regulated by law,
through the monarchy or Church. <...> Only royalty was allowed to wear
gorgeous fabrics and extravagant styles. <...> Moreover, people's choice in clothing has always been controlled by
a wish to conform to the standards of beauty, whether male or female, that
are accepted within their own community. <...> Considerations of modesty also affect our clothing choice. <...> Another interesting aspect of clothing is the changes in style that take
place from one generation to another. <...> Some
colours and patterns last only a season, but seven years is about the time-span
of a major fashion "look" such as mini-skirts or padded shoulders. <...> In every country these rules stem from a
shared sense of social values which are reflected in a shared style of
clothing. <...> There is often a minority of people who reject these values and

styles and choose to demonstrate their independence by wearing shocking or
unusual dress. <...> Punk clothes are just such an example. <...> Vocabulary

USAGE NOTE:
Clothes is the usual word for things we wear: She’s got some beautiful
clothes. <...> Clothing [U] is a more formal word for clothes in general: The workers here
all have to wear protective clothing (NOT clothings). <...> Clothes is not used with numbers, and in conversation if you want to talk
about one piece/item of clothing you would usually call it by its name: I want
to buy a new coat (NOT a new clothing). <...> Garment [C] is a rather formal
word for a single piece of clothing. <...> On a shop notice: Only three garments
may be taken into the fitting room (NOT three clothes).
