This year’s event held in Moscow in May focused on opportunities for nurses’ professional development. LABOUR UNIONS Unions Demand Decent Pay for Medics The Fifth Plenary Meeting of the Russian Healthcare Workers Union Central Committee discussed the issues of pay and adopted an appeal to President Putin bringing to his attention the authorities’ failure to fully comply with the decent pay provisions of Presidential Decree No 597 of 7 May 2012. RUSSIAN REGIONS Role of Nurses in Treatment of Vision Problems in Children A conference in Cheboksary discussed nursing care in pediatric ophthalmology. Enhancing Coordination between First Aid/Midwife Stations and Other Healthcare Providers A seminar in Chuvashia discussed the challenges of providing health services in rural areas, focusing in particular on the work of rural First Aid/Midwife Stations and their engagement with NGOs and physicians in primary care and district hospitals. Patient-centeredness in Focus A regional competition of nurses ‘I Work for My Patients’ launched by the Trans-Baikalia Ministry of Health and the Nurses Association of Trans-Bailkalia was held for a third consecutive year. This competition involving nurses with higher and secondary-level training as well as pharmacists awards the best practitioners for their contribution towards the goal of providing high-quality, affordable and safe healthcare services to people in the region. Moscow Association of Nurses Celebrates 25th Anniversary A conference of the Moscow City Association of Nurses held on its 25th anniversary reported on the results of its work and outlook for the future and discussed the upcoming reforms in nurses’ training and access to professional practice. The Association elected a new Board. LESSONS LEARNED Role of Nurses in Providing Quality Care A conference held on the 70th anniversary of Russia’s Federal Medical and Biological Agency focused on enhancing the role of nurses to ensure better healthcare quality and accessibility. The conference featured presentations of various innovations in nurses’ practice and training.
