Introduction
In his speech at the VIII Congress of the Russian Society of Sociologists, held in November 2012 in
Ufa, president of the RSS, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor V. A. Mansurov informed the audience that
“the upcoming 2013 was announced the Second year of Sociology in Russia, as this is the year of the
55th
anniversary of the SSA / RSS and the 45th
anniversary of the Institute of Sociology of the Russian
Academy of Sciences”. A number of activities are conducted as part of the Second year of Sociology in
Russia, one of which is publication of two special issues of the Journal of Siberian Federal University
(“Humanities and Social Sciences” series) – 8th
and 10th
issues, devoted to sociological topics.
Over the past years, our multidisciplinary peer-reviewed journal has become well known in the
professional community, there are 12 issues a year. In the current thematic issues we have tried to
present the works of our foreign colleagues and colleagues from other cities, although the existence of a
rich history of sociology in Krasnoyarsk Krai, especially in SFU, and in a number of other universities,
created a favorable environment and tradition for the development of this scientifi c discipline. At present,
dozens of candidates and doctors of Social Sciences are working in the krai; bachelors, specialists and
graduate students in Social Sciences are trained in Siberian Federal University, it is also possible to get
a master’s degree in Sociology in SFU.
We cannot but say about those sociologists, famous at home and abroad, who established this
tradition. Of course, the scope of the “Introduction” allows us to name only the best-known scholars,
such as doctor of Philosophy, Professor, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences,
Zh.T.Toshchenko – now the chief editor of the leading journal in the country on sociological issues
“Sociological Research”, who created a sociological laboratory in Krasnoyarsk State University (the
predecessor of SFU) in the 60s. In the mid 70s the Department of Philosophy and the Sociological
laboratory of the University were headed by G. F. Shafranov-Kutsev – (later a deputy Chairman of
the State Committee for Public Education of the USSR, the rector, and then president of Tyumen
State University). Under his leadership, research in the fi eld of industrial sociology was continued,
major projects in the fi eld of social planning were implemented.1
A considerable contribution to the
development of theoretical and applied research in the krai has been made by other famous scientists,
some of whom live in other cities of Russia now.
At the present time, sociology, without exaggeration, is the science without which progressive
development of the modern Russian society and its individual regions, effective modernization of the
country is impossible. This is to some extent evidenced not only by a signifi cant number of works
published by the scientists from SFU and applied research conducted by them, but also a consistently
high competition for “Sociology” in our university. Not only do sociological studies have an important
theoretical and methodological function in the analysis of the ongoing social processes nowadays, but
they also play a signifi cant role in improving effectiveness of managing them. Modern sociology has
changed in many ways, it is becoming the increasingly interdisciplinary and multiparadigm science.
They are these features of sociology that we are trying to refl ect in the pages of Humanities and Social
Sciences series of the Journal of SFU.
