father, Dr. Peter Bryant, a physician, whose father and
grandfather had been physicians, was a descendent of the
Mayflower company. <...> He knew several languages and delighted in
poetry and music. <...> His son owed a great deal to his help and
guidance, and ever cherished a most tender memory of his
father whose life was "marked with some act of goodness every
day." He tells us about him in several of his poems. <...> In "The
Ages" he says: —
"Peace to the just man's memory, — let it grow
Greener with years and blossom through the flight
Of ages; et the mimic canvas show
His calm benevolent features; let the light
Stream on his deeds of love, that shunned the sight
Of all but heaven, and, in the book of fame,
The glorious record of his virtues write,
And hold it up to men, and bid them claim
A palm like his, and catch from him the hallowed
flame."
And in "The Old Man's Funeral" he-questions: —
"Why mourn ye that our aged friend is dead? <...> Ye are not sad to see the gathered grain,
Nor when their mellow fruit the orchards cast,
Nor when the yellow woods shake down the ripened
mast.

The bound of man's appointed years, at last,

His early life
Life's blessings all enjoyed, life's labors done,
Serenely to his final rest has passed;
While the soft memory of his virtues, yet,
Lingers like twilight hues when the bright sun is set."
William Cullen Bryant's mother was Sarah Snell, a
descendant of John Alden and Priscilla, from whom Longfellow
