This
book includes three essays. The first one, “A Country of Merry Gods”,
is devoted to the specific, complicated and multi-dimensional religious and ethical
world of the Chinese people — ancestor worship, Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism,
which have merged together. Presence of Islam, Christianity and Judaism
in the Middle Kingdom is also described. The second essay, “Chinese Riddles”,
examines Chinese language, characters, calligraphy and the view of the world
“through characters” influencing thinking, esthetics, arts, architecture and other
spheres of the Chinese society. In the third essay, “The Edible Dragons”, peculiarities
of the Chinese cuisine are discussed: its mind-bogging ancient age, no
taboos in food for the Chinese, regional differences, health orientation, exotic
qualities of numerous dishes, teas, spirits and tobacco products.
The book, written in a vivid, colorful style, will be of interest to general public.
